Deze lijst bevat termen, afkortingen, acronymen en jargon uit de informatica met daarbij een korte omschrijving en/of de bron van de term. Gebruik het om uw kennis van informatica te vergroten. Deze lijst is nooit compleet, maar we doen wel ons best het zo compleet mogelijk te krijgen. Uw opmerkingen en/of aanvullingen zijn welkom.

  • AA = Auto Answer, indicator op modem wanneer deze is ingeschakeld om oproepen te beantwoorden

  • AAL2 = ATM Adaption Layer, voor connection-oriented services that support a variable bit rate, such as some isochronous video and voice traffic; zie http://www.cisco.com; zie ook AAL

  • AARP = AppleTalk Address Resolution Protocol, protocol van apple voor dynamische toewijzing op een netwerk; zie http://www.apple.com
  • ABI = application binary interface, definieert de interface tussen hardware en het besturingssysteem
  • ABIOS = Advanced BIOS, term van IBM voor BIOS voor OS/2, gebruikt in PS/2
  • ABM = Asynchronous Balanced Mode, HDLC communication mode supporting peer-oriented, point-to-point communications between two stations; zie http://www.cisco.com; zie ook HDLC
  • ABR = Available Bit Rate, QoS class for ATM networks, used for connections that do not require timing relationships between source and destination; zie http://www.cisco.com; zie ook ATM
  • ABR = Area Border Router, router located on the border of one or more OSPF areas that connects those areas to the backbone network; zie http://www.cisco.com; zie ook Router
  • AC3 = ?; gelijk aan Dolby Digital; codering voor 6 geluidskanalen
  • AC97 = The AC97 (Audio Codec 1997) specification defines a high quality audio architecture which should advance the migration to digital audio while maintaining support for analog interconnects for backward compatibility; zie http://www.intel.com
  • ACD = Automatic Call Distribution, device or service that automatically reroutes telephony calls to customers in geographically distributed locations ; zie http://www.cisco.com
  • ACF = Application Configuration File, one of two files that define the interface for a distributed application Th other is the IDL file), configures your application for a particular operating environment; zie http://www.microsoft.com; zie ook IDL
  • ACF/NCP = Advanced Communications Function/Network Control Program, resides in the communications controller and interfaces with the SNA access method in the host processor to control network communications; zie http://www.cisco.com
  • ACGI = Asynchronous CGI; uses threading; zie MacTech sep 95
  • ACK = Acknowledge, signaal bij succes bij datacommunicatie; zie ook NAK
  • ACL = Appletalk Class Library, een verzameling van objecten voor b.v. het initialiseren van AppleTalk etc.; zie MacTech feb 95
  • ACP = Absolute Coordinate Plane, bitmap van het beeldscherm waarbij elk punt overeenkomt met een pixel op het beeldscherm, zoals monochroom VGA; zie PC Techniques jun 93; zie ook WCP
  • ACPI = Advanced Configuration and Power Integration, power management voor Windows 2000; zie PC Advisor feb 99, PCM sep 99; zie ook www.teleport.com
  • ACR = Allowed Cell Rate, parameter for ATM traffic management; zie http://www.cisco.com; zie ook ATM
  • Acrobat = systeem voor platform-onafhankelijke bestandsuitwisseling, werkt met PDF; zie PC+ okt 93; zie ook PDF
  • ACSE = Association Control Service Element, OSI convention used to establish, maintain, or terminate a connection between two applications; zie http://www.cisco.com
  • Active Document = smart document, document is combinatie van data en programma; zie CGW mei 91
  • Active-X (ook ActiveX) = technology voor compacte programmamodules die eenvoudig verspreid en in een applicatie gebruikt kunnen worden; zie http://www.microsoft.com
  • AD = Active Directory, database met objecten van een systeem, in een directorystructuur, tbv beheer van een systeem; zie PCM okt 99
  • ADA = Automatic Data Acquisitions, programmeertaal
  • Adapter = schakeling die signalen omzet naar andere spanning, vorm, frequentie, formaat
  • ADB = Apple Desktop Bus, seriële verbinding van Apple voor muis, toetsenbord
  • ADC = Analoog/Digitaal Converter
  • ADC = Apple Display Connector, combineert video, USB en voedingkabel; zie MacFan mrt 01
  • ADCCP = Advanced Data Communications Control Protocol, ANSI standard bit-oriented data link control protocol; zie http://www.cisco.com
  • ADD = Apple Data Detectors, techniek van Apple voor koppelen van bestanden aan toepassingen; zie http://www.apple.com
  • ADF = Automatic Document Feeder, automatische documentdoorvoer op printer, fax en scanner; zie PCM feb 00
  • ADO = ActiveX Data Objects, technology van Microsoft om op uniforme wijze databronnen te benaderen; zie http://www.microsoft.com
  • ADPCM = Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation, opslagformaat voor audio, o.a. gebruikt in MiniDisc; zie http://www.sony.jp
  • ADSI = Active Directory Services Interface; zie MSDN mei 00
  • ADSL = Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line, techniek voor hoge snelheid datatransmissie over gewone telefoonkabel (8 Mbps); zie Windows Sources apr 98; zie ook www.adsl.nl
  • ADSL lite = standaard voor hoge snelheid datatransmissie over gewone telefoonkabel (1,5 Mbps), gebaseerd op ADSL; zie ADSL
  • ADSP = AppleTalk Data Stream Protocol; zie Byte jul 89
  • ADSU = ATM DSU, terminal adapter used to access an ATM network via an HSSI-compatible device; zie http://www.cisco.com; zie ook DSU
  • ADT = Abstract Data Type, user defined databaseveld, vergelijkbaar met structure; zie http://www.borland.com
  • AE = AppleEvent; zie http://www.apple.com
  • AEC/CAD = Architectural, Engineering, and Construction CAD; zie CGW mei 91
  • AEOM = AppleEvent Object Model; zie MacTech jun 95

  • AFD = Advanced Formating Device, techniek om beeld aan te passen aan het fysieke formaat van het beeldscherm; zie PC Pro apr 00
  • AFI = Authority and Format Identifier, portion of an NSAP-format ATM address that identifies the type and format of the IDI portion of an ATM address; zie http://www.cisco.com
  • AFP = AppleTalk Filing Protocol, zorgt ervoor dat bestanden gedeeld kunnen worden door meer gebruikers op een AppleTalk-netwerk, ziie www.apple.com
  • AFP = Advanced Functions Presentations, architectuur van IBM voor uitgeefsystemen; zie PC+ mei 95
  • AFR = Alternate Frame Rendering, techniek om twee grafische kaarten in tandem te zetten, flikkerend beeld; zie PCM apr 00; zie ook SLI, PGC
  • Agent = programma dat gegevens zoekt/verzamelt op een netwerk
  • AGP = Accelerated Graphics Port, specifiek datakanaal voor grafische informatie, vier keer sneller dan PCI; zie PC+ mei 96, PCM apr 97, PCM jan 98, PCM nov 99
  • AGP-Pro = AGP met extra connectoren voor voedingssignalen; zie PCM mei 00
  • AGP2X = AGP met 2x bussnelheid
  • AGP4X = AGP met 4x bussnelheid (zoals oorspronkelijk bedoeld)
  • AGU = Address Generation Unit, unit in Pentium 4, vormt brug tussen het level 1 data-cache en het register file; zie PCM nov 00
  • AHA = Accelerated Hub Architecture, techniek voor Front Side Bus van Intel, 133 MHz; zie PCM nov 99; zie ook MCH, ICH, FWH, FSB
  • AI = Artificial Intelligence, verzamelnaam voor intelligente software
  • AIC = Application Integration Components, ook: pipeline components, custom COM applications; zie MSDN mei 00
  • AIF = Auto Increment Field, databaseveld dat automatisch de waarde ophoogt bij elk nieuw record; zie PC techniques aug 93
  • AIFF = Audio Interchange File Format, opslagformaat van Apple voor audio; zie http://www.apple.com
  • AIM = AOL Instant Messenger, chat-systeem van Americ OnLine
  • AIMM = AGP Inline Memory Module, uitbreidingskaartje voor AGP-slot, dat alleen geheugen toevoegt aan de videokaart, vervangen door GPA; zie PCM dec 00
  • AIO = Asynchronous Input/Output.; zie http://www.cisco.com
  • AIX = besturingssysteem van IBM
  • ALGOL = Algorithmic Language, programmeertaal
  • Algoritme = een set regels in een bepaalde volgorde om een probleem op te lossen
  • Alias = snelkoppeling, automatische verwijzing naar een bestand
  • Alpha = processor van DEC, 64 bits, RISC; zie PC+ nov 92
  • Alpha blending = technique for reproducing curved surfaces under different lightning conditions; zie PC Plus okt 99
  • Alpha channel = resterende 8 bits van 32 bits grafische kaart worden gebruikt voor besturing van de 24-bits kleurenpixel
  • ALU = Arithmetic Logical Unit, chip voor standaard rekenkundige bewerkingen; zie Byte feb 85
  • Always On ISDN; zie PCM okt 00; zie ook AODI
  • Amoeba = besturingssysteem, houdt gedistribueerd systeem aanschouwelijk (komt pas tot z'n recht bij veel processoren); zie pc+ dec 93
  • AMP = asymmetric multiprocessing; zie MacTech mrt 96
  • AMPS = Advances Mobile Phone Service, standaard voor analoge mobiele telefonie in de Verenigde Staten
  • AMR = Audio Modem Riser, interfacekaart tussen moederbord en telefoonaansluiting; zie PCM nov 99
  • AMR-poort = connector op moederbord waarop AMR-interfacekaart wordt aangesloten; zie PCM nov 99; zie ook AMR
  • AMU = Address Management Unit, schakeling die logische geheugenadressen omzet naar fysieke adressen
  • Analoog = techniek waarbij de signaalsterkte gelijk opgaat met het bronsignaal, in tegenstelling tot digitaal
  • Andes = Architecture with Non-sequential Dynamic Execution Scheduling, systeemontwerp voor R10000; zie PCM jan 95
  • ANSI = American National Standards Institute, verantwoordelijk voor het vastleggen van standaarden in de Verenigde Staten; zie http://www.ansi.com
  • ANSI X = Amerikaanse standaard voor formaat voor EDI; zie PC+ sep 92
  • Anti-aliasing = hoekige randjes bij afbeeldingen en lettertypes gladder maken m.b.v. tussenkleuren
  • AOCE = Apple Open Collaboration Environment, an architecture for mail, messages, catalogs, authentication and digital signature services., also defines MASMs, maakt mac geschikt voor werkgroepen; zie MacTech feb 94
  • AODI = Always On/Dynamic ISDN, standaard om het langzame D-kanaal van ISDN te gebruiken zonder expliciet verbinding te maken; zie Windows Sources apr 98; zie ook ISDN
  • AP = Access Point, a hardware device, or software used in conjunction with a computer, that serves as a communications "hub" for wireless clients and provides a connection to a wired LAN; zie http://www.wi-fi.com/glossary.asp
  • API = Application Programming Interface, set functies voor het gebruik van een programmabibliotheek
  • APM = Advanced Power Management, slim beheer van voedingsspanningen
  • APON = ATM Passive Optical Network: a passive optical network running ATM; zie http://www.adsl.com
  • APP = Asynchronous Pluggable Protocal ; zie http://groups.yahoo.com/group/delphi-webbrowser/
  • APPC = Advanced Program-to-Program Communications, protocol vor onderlinge communicatie tussen programma's op een netwerk, onderdeel van SNA; zie ook LU6
  • AppleBus = netwerksysteem van Apple, voorloper van AppleTalk; zie Byte feb 85
  • Applet = programma die wordt uitgevoerd vanuit een ander programma; zie DDJ nov 95, PC Advisor feb 99
  • Applicatie = programma of pakket van programma's voor een bepaalde taak
  • APPN = Advanced Peer-to-Peer Networking, enhancement to the original IBM SNA architecture, handles session establishment between peer nodes, dynamic transparent route calculation, and traffic prioritization for APPC traffic; zie http://www.cisco.com; zie ook APPC

  • Archie = zoeksysteem op internet, zoekt bestandsnamen; zie emnet 1 94
  • ARCnet = netwerksysteem van Datapoint, op basis van token ring
  • Areal density = this is how densely the data is packed onto a harddisk, measured in dit is hoe dicht de data is samengepakt op een harddisk, uitgedrukt in gigabyte per vierkante inch; zie Pc Pro maa 01
  • Argo = optische chip van ThreeFive Photonics; zie volkskrant sep 01
  • ARM = Asynchronous Response Mode, HDLC communication mode involving one primary station and at least one secondary station, where either the primary or one of the secondary stations can initiate transmissions; zie http://www.cisco.com
  • ARP = Address Resolution Protocol, Internet protocol om internetadressen te vertalen in fysieke adressen (hardware) op een lokaal netwerk; zie http://www3.org
  • Arpanet = Advanced Research Projects Agency Network, voorloper van internet, sinds 1969; zie PCM jul 87
  • ARPC = Asynchrone Remote Procedure Call, methode bij replicatie; zie DB/M sep 94
  • ARQ = Automatic Repeat Request, communication technique in which the receiving device detects errors and requests retransmissions; zie http://www.cisco.com
  • ASAM = ATM Subscriber Access Multiplexer, telephone central office multiplexer that supports SDL ports over a wide range of network interfaces, this device is similar to a DSLAM ; zie http://www.cisco.com
  • ASB = Advanced System Buffering, verbeterde koppeling cache met geheugen in Intel's Coppermine; zie PC Plus jan 00
  • ASBR = Autonomous System Boundary Router, ABR located between an OSPF autonomous system and a non-OSPF network.; zie http://www.cisco.com; zie ook ABR
  • ASC = Apple Sound Chip, schakeling van Apple voor stereo audio in Macintosh II computers
  • ASCII = American Standard Code for Information Interchange, standaard voor de representatie van letters, cijfers, leestekens, etc., 7-bits, dus accenttekens vallen hierbuiten; zie ook EBCDIC

  • ASN.1 = binair formaat voor de uitwisseling van data tussen verschillende computersystemen, ISO 8824; zie DDJ maa 93

  • ASS = Active Symmetric Swapping; Unicode control code; zie Unicode Standard

  • Asynchroon = niet-gelijklopend; bij asynchrone datacommunicatie wordt data verzonden met start- en stopbits en controle codes, beter geschikt voor onbetrouwbare verbindingen dan synchroon
  • AT = Advanced Technology, aanduiding van IBM voor een 16-bits computer

  • ATM = Adobe Type Manager, systeem van Adobe om afwijkende lettergroottes toch scherp op beeldscherm te kunnen tonen
  • ATM25 = ATM Forum defined 25.6Mbit/s cell based user interface based on IBM token ring network; zie http://www.adsl.com
  • ATN = Attention, signaal bij IEEE488; zie Byte feb 85
  • ATRAC = Adaptive TRansform Acoustic Coding; compressie-algoritme gebruikt bij MiniDisc, comprimeert audio tot 1/5e van de grootte, huidige versie ATRAC3; zie PC Plus jul 00
  • Attachment = bijgesloten document bij een emailbericht

  • AUO = Active User Objects, API for writing ASP scripts that access LDAP; zie MSDN mei 00
  • AURP = AppleTalk Update-Based Routing Protocol, method of encapsulating AppleTalk traffic in the header of a foreign protocol, allowing the connection of two or more discontiguous AppleTalk internetworks through a foreign network (such as TCP/IP) to form an AppleTalk WAN; zie http://www.cisco.com
  • AV = Access Violation, programmafout door een ongeldig geheugenadres
